Advantages of Exercise During Pregnancy – How to Manage Your Expanding Baby Bump

For expecting moms who’re curious regarding the benefits of exercise during pregnancy, it’s possible my personal story will help answer the questions you have about exercise while pregnant.

After I became pregnant with my first child I became so happy. My husband and I had a little difficulty getting pregnant so when it ultimately happened it was the greatest thrill of my life. A few months into my pregnant state I was becoming a little worried about my increasing baby bump. Now don’t get me wrong, I was still really happy to be pregnant, I was just a little worried about the weight I was putting on. All my life I had worked at wanting to look skinnier, be skinnier, even think skinnier. I spent lots of time in the gym, in aerobics courses, on the bike paths. I put in a lot of work attempting to look great and be in good health. Now it looked like all my effort would definitely go bye bye.

I was putting on weight at a distressing rate. My head was racing with questions. What if I wasn’t going to be able to shed the excess weight after the baby came? Was I gonna lose my shape forever? Just how huge was my developing baby bump going to get? Are you able to exercise when pregnant? If so, what are the benefits of exercise during pregnancy?

It finally dawned on me that after I became pregnant I became so thrilled and so occupied making plans for the delivery that I had quit exercising. I assume there was a part of myself that thought it could be harmful to exercise during pregnancy, possibly all of the jostling and movement would in some way harm my baby. But I spoke to my physician and found out it not only is safe to exercise in pregnancy, it really is recommended. I must confess I had been giving in to my food cravings a tad too much and taking the “eating for two” theory a little too seriously. And so I made the decision I had to better control my diet during pregnancy too.

So this is what I did to help manage my weight and remain in shape while I was expecting:

I Began a Pregnancy Diet Plan: I learned that pregnant women simply have to consume an additional 300 calories approximately to support the nutritional requirements of their developing baby. I also discovered that a variety of foods along with a good prenatal vitamin is the simplest way to obtain all the nutritional requirements my baby and I needed. So I curbed my cravings and managed my portions. It turns out that “eating for two” is not always true.

I Began Doing exercises: I did a little research and discovered which physical exercises were safe in pregnancy. It turns out most any kind of physical exercise that isn’t overly intense is ok. I constructed myself a pregnancy fitness program around the physical exercises which are safe while pregnant.

Between my diet and exercise program I felt and looked great during the rest of my pregnancy and actually learned to love my growing baby bump. I didn’t do it on my own. I discussed with my physician and followed an excellent pregnancy fitness program that provided details on appropriate diet and exercise. The best news was that by remaining in shape during pregnancy I easily returned to my pre-pregnancy shape soon after my child was born. For me, there were a lot of benefits of exercise during pregnancy.
